Theology Thursday: The Trinity

"Come near to Me, listen to this: From the first I have not spoken in secret, From the time it took place, I was there. And now the Lord GOD has sent Me, and His Spirit." Isaiah 48:16

Background for Parents:

The trinity is a difficult concept for us as adults to comprehend. It is a doctrine clearly evident from the Scriptures, yet one we must accept on faith. So how do we make something we can’t explain to ourselves understandable to our children? The short answer is we don’t. Yet this does not mean we simply ignore the doctrine. We need to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide our children growing them in their faith and teaching them to believe this Scriptural doctrine of faith, just as we have. What we can do is point to the Biblical fact that God does exist in three persons and yet there is one God. This lesson will focus on the evidence of the trinity and what we can learn about our Triune God from the Scriptures.

Memory Verse:

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19

This verse spoken by Jesus to the disciples, just prior to the ascension, clearly identifies the three persons of the trinity. We are instructed to make disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Look at this verse carefully. We are not told to baptize in the names of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit but the name. This phrase is important since it identifies the three persons of the trinity, but yet refers to them as having one name. It describes the unique personhood of each member, but then shows their unity in the Godhead as well.

Introduction:

Today we are going to talk about the trinity. The word trinity does not appear in the Bible, but there are many verses that point to God existing as three persons. So if it’s not in the Bible where does this word come from? What does it mean? Trinity comes from the root word triune. You can think of “Tri” like tricycle meaning three and “une” comes from “unus” meaning one. Therefore, trinity means that God exists in three persons in one. The Father is not the Son. The Father is not the Holy Spirit. The Son is not the Holy Spirit. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all distinct persons yet they are also all God.

Yes, this can be confusing since there is nothing in the world like it. People sometimes think of a three leaf clover or the states of water, liquid, gas, and solid. However, none of these truly describe the trinity. What can we know about the trinity? Let’s see what we can discover from the Bible.

Lesson:

"Come near to Me, listen to this: From the first I have not spoken in secret, From the time it took place, I was there. And now the Lord GOD has sent Me, and His Spirit." Isaiah 48:16

As you read this verse who do you think it is talking? Yes, Jesus is the one speaking. This verse is Jesus speaking and He states that the Lord God sent Him and the Spirit. This verse then is one of many different verses that point to what we call the triune nature of God or trinity.

Today I have a total truth to share with you. Then we are going to talk about each part of this total truth. Today’s total truth is “God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God. There is one God.”

The first part of this truth is that God eternally exists as three persons. This means that God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit have always existed since before time began and they will always exist. It is difficult for us to understand God as eternal, but we must remember He exists outside of time.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made...The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. John 1:1-2, 14

The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis 1:2

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." Genesis 1:26

How do these verses point to the eternality of the Godhead? John 1 clearly points to Christ, the Word, as being with God in the beginning before creation. Since it points to Jesus as the member of the Godhead responsible for creation we know Jesus has always existed with God. Genesis 1:2 describes the Spirit hovering over the face of the waters showing the Spirits presence at creation. As a result of these verses we can see all three members of the Godhead have eternally existed.

We can know that the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are all three fully God from several Scriptures.

Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” John 6:27

"...Anyone who has seen me (Jesus) has seen the Father...Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me..." John 14:9, 11

To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. Romans 9:5

Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16

Finally, we know that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all persons of the Godhead, the one true God.

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Deuteronomy 6:4

So we know there is one God who exists in three persons, God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

During the next several weeks Theology Thursday will focus on what the Bible teaches us about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You will see as we study God and what He has revealed about himself in the scriptures that today’s truth will always hold true. “God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God. There is one God.”

Total Truth:

I have a Total Truth for you today. Are you ready for the truth? Remember the world is full of big lies, but we can always learn the truth from the Bible! Today’s Total Truth is:

God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God. There is one God.

Children's Book Review: Halfway Herbert by Francis Chan

Halfway Herbert is one of several children’s books written by Francis Chan best known as the author of Crazy Love. Chan uses the life of Herbert to illustrate the importance of being 100% committed to following Jesus.

Halfway perfectly describes Herbert who is a seven and a half year old little boy who does everything only halfway. His efforts fall short at home, at school, on the soccer field, and when playing. It is important to stress the effort is halfway not Herbert’s abilities. His father sits down with him and explains that God does not want only half our hearts, He desires our entire heart, Jesus doesn’t want us to love Him a little, He desires all of our love.

The father goes on to tell Herbert the parable of the man building the tower from Luke 14. This parable is in the context of the cost of following Jesus and the 100% commitment Christ expects of His followers.

Herbert recognizes his sinful disobedience and prays, asking for forgiveness and the Holy Spirit so he can know how to follow Jesus. God answers Herbert’s prayer and Herbert is transformed! He now tries to finish things and reads his Bible. He is not perfect but God’s Spirit helps him and he is happier than ever before.

Chan concludes with a letter to parents urging them to pray for their children and themselves. He points to the incredible faith our children can have and how we may pray to emulate them in some ways.

This book stays clear of the moralistic trap of obedience because of rules and makes it clear we are to be obedient out of our love for Christ. I highly recommend this book for those with preschool aged and early elementary children.

Theology Thursday: The Accuracy of the Bible

Sanctify them in truth, your word is truth. John 17:17

Background for Parents:

This week’s focus is on the inerrancy (accuracy) of the Bible. Inerrancy has been debated in Christian churches, schools, and universities and continues to this day. There are two primary views of Biblical inerrancy. The first is the Bible is only accurate for “faith and practice” which means the Bible is accurate when it comes to issues of faith and ethics, but may contain errors in historical, scientific, and other areas. The second is the Bible is inerrant in every area including faith, ethics, science, history, and archeology. When the scriptures are examined it is clear the second view is correct.

However, we are not limited to just internal confirmation. There are many extra-biblical sources confirming the truth of all of the scriptures. Archeology has confirmed locations and people from the Biblical text so often that the Bible is used by secular archeologists as a source when planning their excavations.

You will need the following materials for the object lessons below. A glass of water, index card, hot plate or stove top, soda can, pot holder, and tray of cool water.

Memory Verse

For the word of the Lord is upright. And all His work is done in faithfulness. Psalm 33:4

This verse tells us two important truths. The first is that the word of the Lord, the Bible, is right. This means that the Bible is correct in all it teaches us. Every word in the Bible is true. The second is that all God’s work, everything that He does, is done in faithfulness.

Introduction:

What is air? Where did it come from? What do we call moving air? Just as God created everything else on earth and in the universe He created wind. Job 28:25 states When He established the force of the wind and measured out the waters. Today we are going to examine the force of air. Today there is a big lie in the world about the Bible. Are you ready? The big lie is that the Bible is outdated and there are mistakes in it. We know that the big lie is false and the Bible is full of truth. There is not even one mistake in the entire Bible! Today, we are going to test some details from the Bible.

Lesson:

Job 28:25 declares that God established the earth’s wind and water. This entire chapter of Job describes the source of real wisdom: knowing the Creator who made all things. The force of the wind describes the weight of air. If air had no weight then wind would not have force. So how can we know that air has weight? To begin I have a glass of water. This glass is a little over half full. I am going to place this index card over the top of the glass. What do you think will happen when I turn this glass upside down? Let’s see what happens! The card did not fall to the floor, since the weight of the air pressure is greater / stronger then the weight of the water. This shows us that air has weight since it was a strong enough force to keep the index card stuck to the glass.

Let’s examine the pressure and weight of air in another way. This burner is very hot. I am going to place this can with a small amount of water in it on the burner. Now when the can begins to have steam come from the top I am going to turn it upside down in this tub of water. Watch what happens! What happened? Yes, the can was crushed! The steam inside the can was cooled quickly and the pressure outside the can was greater, so the can was crushed. The weight of air referred to in Job 28:25 crushed the can. Why did I use an index card to keep water in a glass and crush a can? I wanted you to see that every detail of the Bible is true! Just as Job 28 describes how God made the force of wind, all other details in the Bible are true.

Let’s say today’s verse together again. For the word of the Lord is upright. And all His work is done in faithfulness. Psalm 33:4 Remember that we know that God’s word is always true. We do not need to test it in order to know this. Every detail contained in the Bible is absolute truth.

Total Truth:

I have a Total Truth for you today. Are you ready for the truth? Remember the world is full of big lies, but we can always learn the truth from the Bible! Today’s Total Truth is:

All the Words in the Bible are true!

Yes, every single word in the Bible is true. We know we can trust the Bible because it is the Word of God and every word in it is true. II Timothy 3:16 tells us that All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching… in Titus 1:2 we learn that God does not lie. When we understand that the Bible is the Word of God and that God does not lie, then we know that the Bible is true. Every word in the Bible is true!

Children's Book Review: For God So Loved the World My John 3:16 Book

Beginning with creation from the sky, to fish, to tigers, and moms and dads Elena Selivanova provides gorgeous illustrations showing the details of creation. Throughout the book God’s plan is shown as each page contains three rhyming lines and ends with “For God so loved the world.” Throughout the book on the right margin “For God so loved” is written in different languages.

Our need for a Savior is clearly explained in a way children can easily understand and God’s plan to send Jesus to die for us because of His love for us shines through. The truth of the gospel is presented as well as the free gift we receive when we believe in Jesus. The author goes on to describe how the children can pray anytime and how God will always love them. Closing with the promise of being with Jesus for eternity, this book provides the reader with a clear view of the gospel from creation to the guarantee Believers have of spending eternity with God.

The explanation of God’s plan and love for His creation combined with the rhyming and beautiful illustrations will captivate the attention of children from early preschool through first grade.
